Well-Baby Visit Schedule: The First Two Years
The American Academy of Pediatrics' Bright Futures guidelines recommend regular well-child checkups. These visits check growth and development, include recommended vaccines and screenings, and give you time to ask questions.
The usual schedule
| Visit | Typical age |
|---|---|
| Newborn | 3–5 days after birth |
| 1 month | 1 month |
| 2 months | 2 months |
| 4 months | 4 months |
| 6 months | 6 months |
| 9 months | 9 months |
| 12 months | 1 year |
| 15 months | 15 months |
| 18 months | 18 months |
| 2 years | 24 months |
Your pediatrician may add visits, such as an extra weight check in the first weeks.
Before each visit
- ☐ Write down your questions as they come up during the week
- ☐ Bring your feeding, sleep and diaper notes (why a log helps)
- ☐ Bring the insurance card and the vaccine record
- ☐ Pack a spare outfit and diapers
After each visit, write down
- ☐ Date, weight, length, head size
- ☐ Vaccines given
- ☐ What the doctor said to watch for
- ☐ The date of the next visit
When to call between visits
Ask your pediatrician for their list of reasons to call. For a young baby it usually includes a fever (ask what temperature), trouble breathing, poor feeding, or fewer wet diapers. In an emergency, call 911.
Not medical advice. Follow your pediatrician's guidance.
