Moving With Kids and Pets: A Practical Checklist
Kids and pets feel a move more than the adults expect. A bit of planning keeps routines steady and paperwork in order.
Kids: before the move
- ☐ Tell them early and simply; let them help pack one box of their own
- ☐ Ask the current school for records and how to transfer them
- ☐ Contact the new school about enrollment documents (often proof of address, birth certificate and immunization records)
- ☐ Ask the pediatrician for records and a referral if you're moving away
- ☐ Look up the new library, parks and activities together
Kids: moving day
- ☐ Arrange childcare for small children if possible
- ☐ Pack a bag with comfort items, snacks, a tablet and chargers
- ☐ Set up their room first so it feels familiar
Pets: before the move
- ☐ Ask the vet for records and enough medication
- ☐ Update the microchip registration with your new address and phone
- ☐ New ID tag with your phone number
- ☐ Check pet rules, deposits and registration at the new place
- ☐ For long trips, find pet-friendly hotels in advance
Pets: moving day
- ☐ Keep pets in a closed room or with a friend while doors are open
- ☐ Carriers, leash, food, water, litter, and a familiar blanket
- ☐ Never leave pets in a hot car
The first week
- ☐ Keep meal and bed times the same as before
- ☐ Walk the new neighborhood with kids and dogs
- ☐ Keep cats indoors for a while as they adjust
- ☐ Find a new vet and pediatrician (see the first 30 days checklist)
